History of Canberra Lake Tuggeranong Lions Club

The Canberra Lake Tuggeranong Lions Club was formed as a result of a meeting on 30 May 1994 when the Canberra- Valley Lions Club held a meeting to seek an expression of interest.  The meeting was well attended and 16 new Lions signed up that night.  The club was to be the first one to be formed as a mixed club and the first new club in Canberra for 25 years.

On 6 June 1994 a second meeting was held.  By this time 20 new and some Lions from other clubs ensured that a Lions Club could be formed.  The name Canberra Lake Tuggeranong Lions Club was voted upon and the president, secretary, treasurer and the three vice presidents were elected.    A follow up meeting on 15 June 1994 saw the rest of the board and some committees established.  The first project, a sausage barbeque at Rose Cottage was held on the following Sunday.

On 29 June 1994 Lions International charted the new club with 38 members.  Our first dinner meetings were held at the Vikings Club, Erindale.  They were held on the first and third Monday each month. with a separate board meeting held on the forth Monday.

The celebration of the charter was held at the Hellenic Club in Woden with 140 guests attending on 29 September 1994.    Since that time the club moved to the Town Centre Vikings Club in November 1994 and to Chisholm in 1997 (changing to the second and forth Monday) and to the Calwell Club, Calwell in December 2005.

During the years our club have carried out many sausage sizzles and became involve in two major projects.  The Canberra Times Heart Foundation Fun Run (since 1994) and the set up and tear down of the Canberra Times Outdoor Art Show (since 1995).

The Club has assisted in many projects over the years and in 2001, although our membership had dropped to 16, we commenced the Tuggeranong Homestead Markets (Craft and Produce) on the second Sunday each month (except January).  This has been the most successful venture the club has been involved in since forming.

Our club has the most even mix of male/female of any club in our district.

In June 2006 Lake Tuggeranong Lions Club established the first Leo Club in the ACT, Leo Club of Lake Tuggeranong, with 14 members aged from 12 to 22 years.
